"A number of parameters are useful :
- A good mortice view showing symmetrical reduction of the ankle mortice
is essential.
- Anatomical reduction of the fibular fracture and restoration of fibular
length should be confirmed.
- The stability of the syndesmosis can be tested directly once the fibular
fracture has been fixed. This can be done using a small bone hook or a
Homann retractor which is inserted into the syndesmosis and rotated. Any
instability is readily appreciated.
- The medial mortice width should be less than 4mm.
- The talocrural angle, talar tilt angle and width of the syndesmosis
1cm above the joint can be compared to that of the opposite limb.
- The posterior edge of the tibia (reverse Tillaux fragment) should overlap
the fibula by 6mm."
